Here are some pictures
that I took while attending a workshop presented by
Susie Haas
I attended a workshop
entitled,"Teaching Reading and Writing in your
Kindergarten Classroom."

This is one of the books that
Mrs. Haas' class made for the 100th day of school. On
the right, is a picture of her birthday journal, which
is something that you purchase through her catalog,
Scribbles-n-Dots.
Here is the inside of
her ants book.
This is her way of celebrating the
100th day in school.
This is a book that I saw, that I
made in my classroom. It is an accordion book. Mine
however, did not turn out like this though!
Here is what she calls. "Wall
Stories." There are pictures of her students as the
characters in the story. The story is of Ten in the
Bed.
Here is a class book about 10
Little Snowmen. It has a removable sun that goes on
each page.
This is another version of a "Wall
Story" called Ten Spring Flowers. The kids painted
the title, after Susie demonstrated it first.
This is another big book that her
class has made during choice time.
The book is all student
created.
This is Susie's abc book. Susie
tells us that her classes each year make one for the
classroom. They use it daily to work on the name of
the letter, the sound that goes with the letter, and
picture.
Here are two more big books that
her classes have made.
I thought that this was very
appropriate considering the times we live in. It
would be perfect for president's day. There is a
writing frame at the bottom.
This is how she displays her big
books. It is made from pvc pipe. She just found those
cool hangers at the IKEA store. She said that she
usually just used regular hangers with clothes
pins.

These books utilizes her ever
popular, Cadre of Characters. If you can see the
shadow, they are 3-D books.
This is in the inside of her big
books. The name tickets that she uses are then put in
the front of the books.
The first thing that a child can
read in your classroom. I have a poem similar to
this, that I found at KinderKorner

Here is a book on the farm. There
is a small copy that each child made and a big book
version. Have your students list animals they find on
a farm. They go back and list rhyming pairs. I took
these pictures because I love these frogs! Aren't they
cute!
Here is her class newspaper. The
students tell the teacher one sentence and then the go
to illustrate their work. This part of the day is
called "Daily News."
I love this book! What a great
idea. It also has a song that goes to '99 Bottles"
i-n-g spells ing, i-n-g spells ing, i-n-g i-n-g i-n-g
spells ing" It works trust me!
Another big book that her kids
made using her name tickets.
Here is a great graph. At the
top, you can see that some of the words are purple.
This is highlighter tape. What a WONDERFUL tip. I
found some hi-lighter tape at a dollar store. It is
really stuff you use to cover books. I got it in a
pack for about a buck! She uses this whenever her
class comes across a "STAR WORD." Here is what I
bought on the way back from my workshop.

I am not sure if this
student made book was for Seven Blind Mice by Ed Young
or If You Give A Mouse a Cookie book. But in any
case, she has incorporated art, reading, and math.

The cover and inside of a book
that has so much importance in any young writers
life.

Here is another book that talks about
opposites.
Here is the display that she uses
for her Star Words.
I have a job in my class called
"Math Marvel" we have been doing a survey everyday.
I was glad that I at least was on the right track.
However, we had been just throwing them out. Now I
hang them on the board, and at the end of each month,
I will bind them together in a book and place in the
library.
Here is something that that she
calls a Reading Mat. This one is made from a vinyl
table cloth. A fellow teacher at my workshop, said
that she was finishing up upwards of 75 reading mats!
OH!!! MY!!!!

Here is a book that goes over
color words. I am not really sure where it originated
from.
Needless to say, that I really enjoyed listening
to Susie. She is a wonderful teacher and a great
presenter. In Scribbles - n - Dots, I own and USE the
following materials:
*Cadre of Characters
*Caterpillar Capers and Journal
*Celebrate Me
*Snowman Spectacular
*The ABC collection
