Math Ideas
Roll a Shamrock
Kids roll a die and take that many shamrocks. I use erasers from
Oriental Trading as our counters.
Program a sheet of paper with shamrock
outlines. Have kids roll a die and shade in the clover.(Adapted from Hubbarb's Cupboard)
Shamrock Math Mat - programmed mat- with
erasers and die.
Pots of Gold(idea adapted from teachingheart.net)
Take 10 black film canisters and paint 55 beans gold. Have the
students put the correct number of "gold" in each "pot"
I used a paint pen to write on the outside of each "pot"
Graphs:
Have you seen a leprechaun?graph I created
Do You believe in leprechauns? (idea from teachingheart.net)
Have you ever seen a rainbow?
Lucky Charms graph (from teachingheart.net)

Word Bank
This is our pocket chart with St. Patty day words:

shamrock, St. Patricks Day, clover, luck, lucky, gold, rainbow,
leprechaun,

Using die cuts, program them with numbers
and the kids put the correct number of erasers on each shamrock. (0-10= 55 counters)
Rainbow Spinner
Create a spinner with 7 seven areas. Label each area a color
Give students a blank rainbow sheet. Each time the kids spin the spinner
They color in the rainbow.
We made a graph"How many people wore green"
We made a graph for green foods we liked after
we tasted them. We tasted celery, broccoli, green pepper, and cucumber.
On another day, we talked about potatoes
So we graphed which "potato" we liked the best. Their choices were:
mashed, baked, chips, and french fries.

(These pictures were taken from a B. Dwyer workshop that I attened)
We brainstormed how to eat potatoes- one girl said with a fork- then her sister
says a spoon. Still not what I was getting at! We finally got to items made from
After that, they came up with tons of ideas--- BUT NO chips!!!!
We tasted four different kinds of chips. Regular, wavy, BBQ, and Sour Cream and Onions.
The first photo is my attempt at a potato and the second is supposed to be a chip!

We thought of foods that were green. I don't have a stove or microwave in my room
so our food choices were cut down a little this year. We graphed only three things
Our graph said "Yummy/ Yucky for each food. While we were brainstorming our green things
they guess several, but they were missing one that I had brought. Pickels!
So we tasted pickles, grapes, and celery. Celery- got a so-so review.

Center Ideas
Program die cuts with the upper/lower case
and have kids match.
"Shamrock Happy" pocket chart/also make a book
Using real potatoes and a scale, have
students weigh classroom items against potatoes.

Art Ideas

Have the kids paint a large rainbow
after it dries, cut it out. Then have the kids lace the same
color yarn through the bottom. (There is teacher prep involved)
You will need to cut out the rainbows and punch holes in the bottom)
These make great hanging displays.
Shamrock Sun catchers
If you have two nesting shamrocks, you
could lay one side down and using tissue paper,
liquid starch, put shamrock shape on a paper plate
and have your students "paint" the tissue paper pieces
on top of one clover and cut off excess, if any, then let dry.
Attach another clover overlay.(I can't post a picture, becuase
we haven't done this yet!
Potato Art
Using potatoes, if you can, make potato prints.

Games To Play
Place large shamrocks on the floor
have children hop from one to another in a certain order.
Uses:numbers, site words, story attributes
Clover Point: Draw clovers on a shower curtain and have kids point
and say words as they point to them. (Idea adapted from Dr. Jean)
Bingo
memory using St. Patty's stickers

Poems to Share
Leprechauns peeking,
Around a willow tree,
Pussy willows waking,
Longing to be free.
Colleens and shamrocks
And castles old and gray,
Put them all together
To make St. Patrick's Day.

The Wearin' O' the Green
Today is the day fer the wearin' o' the green.
Today is the day when the little people are seen.
Today is St. Patrick's Day, so if ye'r Irish me lad,
Join the celebratin' fer the grandest time ta' be had.
Ya' put yer hand up in the air, the other hand on your hip.
Ya' tap yer toe, ya' tap yer heel, ya' bounce yer knee a wee bit.
Ya' prance 'n dance around the room, n' circle one two three.
The saints be praised, I must admit, ya' all look Irish ta' me.

Leprechaun
Leprechaun, leprechaun, fly across the sea
And fetch an emerald shamrock for you and me.
Do not bring a nettle or a thistle for a joke,
But bring an Irish shamrock, for we are Irish folk.
And you and I, my leprechaun, will wear the shamrock gay,
And match it with and Irish smile upon St. Patrick's Day!

The Leprechauns are Marching
The Leprechauns are marching,
They're marching down the hall,
They're marching on the ceiling,
They're marching on the wall.
They're marching two by two,
And now it's four by four,
You say you still can't see them?
Move back! Here come some more!
The leprechauns are marching,
I think it's three by three.
Just close your eyes and try now
To visualize with me.
Their merry little feet
Will never miss a beat.
They're very tricky fellows.
Look out! They're under the sheet!

St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick came from Ireland
A country trimmed with green
It has the shamrocks and the pipes
Those leprechauns you've seen
Those leprechauns will trip you
You'll fall flat on your face
They'll tickle your nose and sour the milk
Then find a hiding place!

I'll Wear a Shamrock
St. Patrick's Day is with us,
The day when all that's seen
To right and left and everywhere
Is green, green, green!
And Irish tunes they whistle
And Irish songs they sing,
To-day each Irish lad walks out
As proud as any king.
I'll wear a four-leaf shamrock
In my coat, the glad day through,
For my father and mother are Irish
And I am Irish too!
Mary Carolyn Davies

St. Patrick's Day
Oh, my mother isn't Irish
And my father isn't too,
But today I feel as Irish
As the really Irish do.
For today I wear a shamrock
That is green in every way
And though I am American,
I am Irish -- for today!

One leaf for wisdom and one leaf for love
If I could be a clover
I would have 4 leaves
