Here is my daily schedule using Daily 5.Schedule 2008-2009
Here is the template that I use to plan my centers: Centers for the week

Here are some areas in my classroom.
My daily schedule:

7:55-8:00 Children enter the room and hang up backpacks & jackets. Put
Home Reading connection envelope in bin. Place Communication Notebook in container.
Make their lunch choice hot or cold. Find name card in attendance pocket chart, take to the
table, and write Name Ticket.(Name Tickets are 3x4 inch sheets of paper that the kids write their names correctly
on and then show to the teacher. They also write the date on the back. (12-16-03.)
The kids use their name cards, written on sentence strips, from the pocket chart to correctly
see their names. After they write it, they show it to a grown up. They ask,"Is this your best
work?" They usually tell you the truth. If it isn't the best, the kids throw it away and
start over. For those who are struggling with this, I write their name with a thin yellow marker
and tell them to follow the yellow brick road. Then they put their ticket in a small container
and we use them for a variety of different things. Then they put their name cards on the pocket chart under "I am here today"
I use these on Mondays to pick children to pick the discovery packs. Other times, they can be used to make an author's page.
On the page I made after I went to see Susie Haas
she uses them for the author's page. If you scroll down about half way, you can see an example
After their name tickets are written, they get a book to read. This way, if there is a
parent or visitor, I can talk with them. This also gives me a chance to check their take home notebooks.
We then gather together and the Attendance Helper takes attendance and lunch count and takes it to the office.
Then we continue when the helper gets back. We do calendar, days of the week song, months song, links, straws,
money, tally, and weather. We have a Weather Forecaster. That person, checks outside and
reports back to us during the song we sing. We look at our schedule for the day. I made
cards using sentence strips and clip art. Later in the year, I add times with a clock face
and digital clocks. We go over our daily jobs if it is Monday. My kids keep their jobs
for a week. My kids each have a job to do. One of the jobs that I have is:
*Math Marvel - asks the question of the day. (at the beginning of the year, I give them the
questions and later, they get to choose their own. I do have some extras, just in case.)
We hang these up and after a month, we make them into a book and put them in our library.
We have our book boxes. These contain our three moring cards. The three are an Alphafriends
the Discovery Toys alphabet, and a 100's board.Take a look at where the idea came from at KinderKorner
On Fridays, we do our cards backwards. This lets me know who knows what they are doing, and who
needs help. On my cards, I have the words written, so that when a guest teacher comes in,
they know what to say. We read Susie Haas' ABC book. Look about 1/4 of the way down. After that pocket charts, we read our Happy Poem for the month,
our month chart, and others. Then some Song and Poetry cards, the helper sometimes gets to
choose what cards I do. After that, we read a story or two. One for the theme or one from
our reading series. After each item, we sing a song or do a movement activity. Our grouptime
lasts until 9:30. I also tell them who the reporters are.

9:30-9:45 is recess (I have one duty a week)

9:45-10:00 Children come in and get drinks go to the bathroom and we talk about centers.
Give directions, go over procedures, and answer any questions. I have tried to
color code levels at my centers. I learned this from Linda Holliman
Green= easy, Yellow= medium, and red= harder. This way, I can expose my students
to the same activities, but still meet their individual needs. The kids don't
really know there are differences. I tell them that if they are in the green group
they need to do a certain number of cards. As well as the others. I increase the
number as the groups get harder and the kids master the tasks. We hand out their center folders
These are easy and cheap to make. Take two 11x18 construction pieces of paper. Fold
one hot dog way and the other one hambruger way. Slip the hamburger one into the
Staple along the open edges. Older children or later in the year for my K's, I use
these. In the front pocket, you put a center menu. This is a half sheet with boxes
You write each center name in a seperate box. On the inside pockets: left any
worksheets or paperwork that you need your kids to compete. On the right, anything
that they think in complete. If it is okay with me, put it in the back pocket, marked
"HOME."

Another idea that I have used is a "centers notebook." This is just a spiral bound
notebook that the kids write/draw what they did at each center.Picture is coming.

10:00-11:00 Center Time

These are some that I do. I don't start out with all of these at the beginning
*Song & Poetry Cards
*library with book tickets
*pocket charts
*writing
*words
*math
*science
*art
*games/file folder games
*theme

Song and Poetry Cards center: read all poetry cards. Here is a picture of my kids reading them.

Library with book tickets
Have kids "read" books and fill out "Book Tickets" A book ticket is a 3x6 sheet of paper. The kids write their names, the date, the title of the book and then draw a picture. Hand it in and after two weeks, pass them out and staple them together and send home.

Pocket Charts- must read them all There are at least six charts for them to read. I try to make most of them interactive.

Writing Center- paper, pens, markers, stamps, stencils, envelopes Towards the bottom of the page is a picture of my writing centerI have a tool shelf with drawers. There are two drawers for each letter. One draw has letter stamps and the other drawer has stamps with pictures of that letter.

words center-this changes, but one idea might be using magnetic letters to spell words, using Wikki Sticks, foam letters, ect.

Math Center- let them explore some manipulatives. At first i just put math items out, they will have fun and learn too!

science- get a scale and other science related itemslet them explore. Magnets is another idea too.

Art Center- let them just be creative! I put fabric, beads,"junk" I got a ton of craft stuff from a lady at my church, and let them create something. I also have play dough, sewing, wall paper books. Sometimes I add some large stencils during the units that they fit.The kids make very interesting ocean creatures with the wall paper books!

Games/File Folder Games/Flashcards- Have some shelves that are just for center materials. Put a few selected games there. I have a plastic three shelf system that I keep my in use centers. I have an old cubbie box to store my flashcards in. The box itself is about 4 inches high and 18 inches long. You can get little individual boxes at the dollar store to hold each set of cards.

Theme- this changes often- this can be whatever you want. But a few things that could go here are taped stories with theme stuffed animals or a special project or whatever!

I meet with two reading groups per day. I don't have reading groups at the beginning of the year. During our regular meeting times I do the following:

Day one: we read our weekly poem. They illustrate the poems during their Song and Poerty center. Since we have already read the poem of the week before center time, and my groups are not leveled, the kids can get their poems anytime, even before we meet as a reading group. If they are struggling readers, there will be someone who can read it to them or they read it on the pocket chart with the pictures.
Day Two: We read a theme related book. No matter the level, I have books at various levels for most things. For the beginning readers, we use Scholastic's Phonics Readers. I use the blackline masters for my groups.
Day Three:Read the same book again. We discuss and I access them.
Day Four: If there is a day four, we re-read our poem and our book.
During center time, I also listen to them read the book they took home for my Take Home Reading Connection. Take a look at my inspiration site at Vicotria's Take Home Connection page. During this time, I can individually access my students by taking Running Records or for a report card item. During my first grading period in K, all we write down is their attendance!! But I do a mid-quarter that is much better and more comprehensive.

11:00-11:30 We have lunch

11:30-12:00 The children have recess.
We are not required to eat with our kids or supervise them at lunch recess.

12:00-12:30 We brush our teeth and take a rest. During this time, I test the first graders using Runing Records. We have a crate with several leveled books for each level and recording sheets to go along with each book. The sheets have all the words written down.

12:30-1:00 Daily News-This idea came from Susie Haas.Scroll down about 3/4 of the page. She calls it Gingerbread News. Each day there are two news reporters. They get to wear plastic visors that I got at the Dollar Tree. They have had the whole moring to decide what they want to say, so I don't really get the "I don't know" answer. They get to wear the hats the whole time they are the reporters. The whole class helps me write the basics.

Today is ___________.
It is ________. Later in the year I add "and" so the sentence says It is __________ and __________.
Noah says,"________" I write with help, what he tells me.
Elise says, "_____" Same procedure here too. Then those two take a 4x4 sheet of paper and a black marker and illustrate what they said. While they are doing that, the rest of us look for "Star Words." These are the five words that I introduced on Monday. I keep a list to keep track of who is next to be the reporter. I write the dates next to their names.

1:00-1:45 Specials (Phys. Ed., art, music) We have physical education twice a week and music and art only once. We usually do a weekly art project from TLC Art

1:45-2:00 recess (I have one duty a week)

2:00-2:45 Theme Work

2:45-3:00 We review what we have done, anything special for tomorrow and we pack up for the day. Two very important workers have to do their jobs: Garbage Great and Room Inspector. Although, everyone helps clean up, these two have the final say. They get very protective especially when we have a TLC art project, and someone else gets the garbage can, when it is their job! I found out one year, that Garbage Great was a favorite job for many of the students. The Room Inspector makes sure all the chairs are stacked and the bean bags are neat, a general tidyness of the room. **NOTE** When one of my kids are sick the Helper Of the Day does that job. However, on that rare ocassion, when I have had two kids out, it turned out to be the leader and the caboose!! Then the last week's person does that. So the helper gets to be what job he wants and then the other one does the other job. I hope that makes sense.
