Check out my take home pack for Colors
I begin off the year with colors.I teach my students
the color songs from Frog Street Press. The color words
are the first words that my kids learn to spell.
I use the color songs for our first set of poems
for our Poetry Notebooks. They are the first
things that my kids can read. They are excellent
tools and I don't know what I would do without them!
They are favorites throughout the year and we
sing them almost daily

Songs

Color Farm- Dr. Jean
The Worls is A Rainbow - Greg & Steve
Color, Shape, Size - Jack Hartman
Gummy Bears - Dr. Jean

Orange
(To the tune of "The Wheels on the Bus")
The pumpkins in my garden are orange, orange, orange,
O-R-A-N-G-E.
The oranges on my tree are orange, orange, orange,
O-R-A-N-G-E.

Blue
(To the tune of "Row, Row Your Boat")
B-L-U-E
Spells the color blue.
The sky, the ocean and some birds
Are all a beautiful blue.

Green
(To the tune of "London Bridge is Falling Down")
G-R-E-E-N spells green,
Like a frog,
Or a tree.
G-R-E-E-N spells green,
Just like broccoli.

Red
(can be sung to the tune of Three Blind Mice)
R. E. D.
R. E. D.
Red is the word
Red is the word
Apples and strawberries both are red
Tomatoes and cherries both are red
R.E.D. spells
Red, red, red.

Brown
(To the tune of "Farmer in the Dell")
B-R-O-W-N
B-R-O-W-N
B-R-O-W-N
That's how you spell brown.
The gingerbread man is brown.
The gingerbread man is brown.
B-R-O-W-N
The gingerbread man is brown.
And chocolate chips are brown.
And chocolate chips are brown.
B-R-O-W-N
That's how you spell brown.

Color Song
(to the tune of "The Itsy Bitsy Spider")
Orange is a carrot,
Yellow is a pear,
Green is the grass,
And brown is a bear,
Purple is a plum,
Blue is the sky,
Black is a witch's hat,
And red is cherry pie.

The Color Song
(To the tune of "This Old Man")
Red, red, red, touch your head.
Blue, blue, blue, tie your shoe.
Brown, brown, brown, touch the ground.
White, white, white, take a bite.
Black, black, black, touch your back.
Purple, purple, purple, draw a circle.
Pink, pink, pink, give a wink.
Gray, gray, gray, shout hurray!

Here are my song and poetry cards from Frog Street Press.
I also made big books and my students have student sized copies
that they can read too.

Poems

Yellow
Yellow is a star.
Yellow is the sun.
Yellow is the moon,
When the day is done.

Orange
Orange is an orange.
Orange is a carrot.
Orange is the color
of the beak of a parrot.

Blue
Blue is the ocean.
Blue is the sky.
Blue are the blueberries
I put into the pie.

Green
Green is grass,
String beans and peas.
Green is the branches
on Christmas trees.

Red
Red is an apple.
Red is a cherry.
Red is a rose.
And a ripe strawberry

Brown
Brown is mud,
Brown is toast,
Brown is chocolate,
And a Sunday roast
Purple
Purple are grapes.
Purple are plums.
Purple is a violet.
And the bruise on my thumb.

Red
The fireman's hat
is too big for my head,
so I wear a red bucket
when playing, instead.
Red ruby treasure
on Valentine's Day,
with imagination
its "Pirates" we play.
Your nose turns red
when it's cold outside,
and sometimes too
when you're sad inside.
Some girls wear red ribbons,
bows tied in their hair,
while eating red berries
is the big, black bear.
Hearts are red on cards,
and also in your chest,
red is the color
that I like best.

Pink
Pink skies
and butterflies
are truly a
sight to see,
But pink-eye
infection would
be no fun
for me.
Grapefruit pulp,
the salmon's flesh,
carnations
in a vase,
Pink elephant
nightmares
with candy
as the cause.
Stop and think
about the pink
that's everyday
around you,
Ballerina sister,
a bouncing twister,
around the house
in her tutu.
Green Giant
There lived a green giant whose name was Sam.
His hair was the color of strawberry jam.
He had one brown and one blue eye,
And a beard the color of pumpkin pie.
His coat and pants were gay and bright,
Like a peppermint stick, all red and white.
His shoes were as brown as a chocolate drop.
His stockings were yellow as lemon pop.
His hat was the color of ginger bread
With a tall, tall feather of raspberry red.
Green
Green is the grass
and the watermelon skin,
fourth color in the rainbow,
the emeralds in a ring.
Bright green apples
are bitter to the tongue,
but spinach and broccoli-
I eat them up yum!
Green mold is medicine
known as penicillin,
and water fights with
green balloons sure are thrillin'.
Green means go
when driving, beep! beep!
and green lily pads
are where the frogs sleep.
For flowers and trees,
and the prickly cactus too-
green is important,
as it is for me and you

Art

Crayon resist
Crayon shaving
Crayon drawing on a hot plate
Art book atKinderart

After teaching warm/cool colors
have kids create an easy art project that I learned from Bridget Dwyer

Math Ideas

Crayon Math Mats
I bought some crayon earsers for a math center.

Games/Activities

Red, Red, Red, green (like Duck Duck Goose)

Science

ABC ideas

Using die cut crayons, label each one with
a letter.
Make a set or several sets where the students
have to match upper and lower case letters.

Pocket Charts

Orange is an orange
yellow is the sun
brown is a bear
and purple is a plum
red is an apple
green is a tree
black is a hat
I can read.
Listen to me!

I have a color chart for
each color that follows the same pattern
A flower can be purple
Some people just put cards in place
of the color word, but I write the
color word on colored paper.

Some of the poems above make great p/c too.

Bulletin Board Ideas

I made a crayon box out of bulletin board paper
and made small crayons inside (so it looked like a real box of crayons.) I had
everyone write their name on a crayon and called it "Color My World"

Books to Make

I created some predictible books
for every color. They follow the same format
A (color item) is (color word)
A plum is purple.
I use these as pocket charts too.
I made the books slightly different then the
p/c. I have a twist at the end.
Make a classbook to go
along with the song"What a Wonderful World"
Make a classbook: What is...
and have kids find things that are that color
and put that color item on that color page.
We made individual color songs books. Each child
illustrated the color song and we bound together.
